Marvel Head Kevin Feige Comments on ‘Superhero/Franchise Fatigue’

There used to be a time when we would be lucky if we got a superhero/comic book movie once a year, but with the boom of the superhero industry, a year can contain 3–4 comic book films. A lot of audiences are worried about “Superhero Fatigue” eventually hitting the MCU, and Marvel head Kevin Feige assures that Marvel is trying its best to bring in something different every time.

Talking to Vulture, Feige comments:

“For years, predating the history of Marvel Studios itself, people asked me about superhero fatigue and if it was a fad or a phase. I say, if they’re all different, if they’re all special, nobody will get tired of these things before we at Marvel Studios will, since we live and breathe these things 24 hours a day. You make films like Thor: Ragnarok, like Homecoming, like Guardians of the Galaxy, certainly like Panther, and the upcoming Infinity War to keep it interesting and change it up. And we will continue to do that.”

Though Marvel still continues to make bank at the box office, a lot of people have admitted that their movies have been coming out as formulaic at times. Sure Doctor Strange was a foray into new property, but the film was basically Iron Man with magic.

Hopefully, Marvel finds more ways to wow the audience down the line. Infinity War will be the end of an era for the MCU, so Phase 4 could be open to all kinds of movies. There’s so much they can do now that they have rights to X-Men and the Fantastic Four.

Franchise Fatigue is something that concerns every pop-culture fan. Though I’d love to have a Star Wars movie every year, I admit the hype kind of gets less and less with every announced movie. Either way, you bet I’ll be there to see Solo on the first day.

Going back to Marvel though, hopefully, the concern of franchise fatigue is what gets them to try bolder moves with their films. How awesome would it be if they introduced multiverses to the MCU?

The next movie for Marvel Studios is Black Panther, and it’s set for a release on Feb. 16.
