Lionsgate is Developing a Twilight TV Series

Harry Potter fans are still trying to process the thought of HBO rebooting the franchise as a series, but now another hit movie IP is going to be coming to television.

THR reports that Lionsgate has ordered a Twilight series based on Stephenie Meyers’ hit books, and the show has tapped Sinead Daly (Raised by Wolves, The Get Down) to provide the script.

While the Potter series has been confirmed to be a reboot of the original story by J.K. Rowling, it’s unclear what kind of story the Twilight series is going to be telling; whether they would completely reboot the story of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen; or whether they would just push the story forward and focus on a new fantasy romance centered on Bella and Edward’s daughter Renesmee.

With Mackenzie Foy, who played Renesmee in the series, already in her 20s, I could imagine the show could bring her back to reprise her role, then again, that kind of opens up expectations to bring back Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who have to look like they’re still teens following vampire logic. There’s probably a chance to bring back Taylor Lautner’s Jacob as well, since he’s a character that ages regularly, but I don’t know if Lautner would be open to reprising his role.

The Twilight movies were a massive hit back when they came out in the early 2010s but there had been a lot of online hate directed toward the franchise when it came out. Maybe nostalgia and a different internet climate will embrace a return to Twilight, but until we get our first look, we’ll just have to wait and see.

No release date has been set for the Twilight series.
