James Wan had breathed new life into the DCEU with Aquaman, and he’s signed on to come back and direct the sequel. What’s interesting is, Wan looks to be working on another project before he comes back for another underwater adventure.
Talking to CinemaBlend, Wan was asked about his next project, and he says, “I think I kind of know… it won’t be Aquaman 2 just yet. I have something else I’m cooking up. Not ready to share just yet.”
We don’t know exactly what Wan has in mind for his next film, but it’s possible it will be something outside of the superhero genre—more likely horror. He’s also attached to produce a movie based on the Trench location from Aquaman, but it looks like he won’t be directing that project. What’s interesting though, is that Trench spinoff could come out way before Aquaman 2 does.
Producer Peter Safran had this to say about The Trench:
“We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie. Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”
For now, Aquaman 2 is slated to come out on Dec. 16, 2022.
