After The Suicide Squad, James Gunn is set to come back to Marvel Studios and resume work on his third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Though his franchise has been one of the more solid entries in the MCU, it may look like Gunn will finish telling his story with this third film.

When asked by a fan if he had plans for Vol. 4, Gunn had explained that he was focused on making three films from the start. Gunn wrote on his IG stories:

I absolutely never said I wouldn’t do a Vol. 2, as I planned to do a trilogy from the beginning if the first one worked. I have no plans to do a 4th.

If anything, I think three movies is the perfect way to end the story of this iteration of the Guardians. Gunn has said that he would be open to an altering of the roster down the line, but that would probably have to come from another director. If anything, I think the best move for Gunn would be to move on rather than to be stuck making the same kind of movie for years (looking at you, David Yates).

We don’t know what’s in store for Vol. 3, but rumor has it that Rocket will finally come face to face with his ‘creator’ the High Evolutionary. It’s also rumored that Drax will be reconnected with his lost daughter, but again, these are just rumors.

The Guardians are probably the favorite characters of the MCU right now, and fans have really come to love this band of space misfits. Hopefully Gunn manages to give us the ending he wants with this third movie.

No release date has been set for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but some are guessing it could hit theaters by 2022.
