It’s no mystery that the Hellboy reboot ended up bombing in the box office, and when it came out, it was bashed very harshly by critics online. David Harbour, who was the new Right Hand of Doom, opens up about the film’s reception and says he was still proud of his work.
Talking to Digital Spy, Harbour opens up:
“We did our best, but there’s so many voices that go into these things and they’re not always going to work out. I did what I could do and I feel proud of what I did, but ultimately I’m not in control of a lot of those things.”
“The problem that I have with comic book movies nowadays is that I think, and it’s a result of the power of Marvel stuff, it’s like chocolate, it’s a flavor. And I sort of want a world where there’s more flavors than just comparisons to chocolate. So in that way when Hellboy is viewed on the chocolate spectrum, it does very poorly.”
Personally I thought the film was actually a fun romp, and I had no idea why critics were talking about it so horribly. Harbour was amazing as the new Hellboy, and you could even say that the creature designs and prosthetics for the film were better compared to the del Toro films.
Sure the movie was campy, but I think that’s what adds to the whole charm of Hellboy in the first place. If you ask me, people were too hung up on del Toro’s Hellboy not being able to finish that they subconsciously ended up hating this movie more than it deserved.
Hopefully the movie gets better praise over time, but I guess time will tell. I’m hoping that Harbour actually gets to reprise Hellboy in the future, but for now it looks very unlikely.
