The first trailer for Sony Pictures The Emoji Movie has arrived. Featuring the voice talents of T.J. Miller, Anna Faris, James Corden and Patrick Stweart (he’s the poop emoji in case you were wondering), The Emoji Movie takes us inside our phones to meet the characters we use every day.

The synopsis for The Emoji Movie reads as follows:

The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Anna Faris). Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.

From the looks of this first trailer, The Emoji Movie is aimed at young teens rather than kids, but it’s a safe bet that there will be plenty of jokes in there for adults, too. It’s a novel and smart concept; these little figures are used daily, more than once by most of us, and we all have our favorites, the ones we keep for specific circumstances, and the ones we never use.

Whether the storyline will work is another matter. In many ways, the plot is reminiscent to Pixar’s Inside Out, in that we’re getting a look inside the workings of something, though this time it’s a device. Still, it’s an important device, and the way these characters react greatly impacts the user. For many, though, just seeing all these emoji’s brought to life on the big screen will be enough to ensure that The Emoji Movie performs reasonably well at the box office, at the very least.

The Emoji Movie will be released on July 28th in the U.S., and 4th August in the U.K..
