Monkey D. Luffy Revealed for ‘One Piece on Ice’

Netflix is currently gearing up for their live-action adaptation of One Piece, but Eiichiro Oda’s pirate epic is getting another live-action treatment where we least expected it.

Just in, we have our first look at Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece on Ice – Episode of Alabasta, and he’s going to be played by three-time Olympic medalist Shoma Uno. Check this out:

We don’t have a look at any of the performances yet, but director Kahori Kanaya is said to be helming the production with Kenji Miyamoto (Yuri!!! on ICE) said to be attached as the choreographer.

It’s pretty interesting that they decided to choose the Alabasta arc to adapt for an ice show, seeing that the arc takes place in a desert setting. I guess ice skating would also be a fitting visual for this arc, seeing that one of the main antagonists, Mr. 2 Bon Kurei, is a crossdresser who has an affinity for dance—and he likes getting dressed up in swans and ballet shoes.

The show is set to play from August 11–13 at KOSE Shin Yokohama Skater Center and September 2-3 at Aichi Dolphins Arena, and you can read more about it on the official site here.

With Naruto managing to pull off a live-action theater play, it’s pretty cool that One Piece would go so far as to make an actual ice show. Hopefully it manages to be successful enough that we can get some more arcs adapted on the ice rink.

One Piece on Ice – Episode of Alabasta starts this August at KOSE Shin Yokohama Skater Center.
