Michael Shannon Got Confused When He was Asked to Return for The Flash

Michael Shannon’s General Zod had famously died in Man of Steel and was resurrected as Doomsday in Batman v Superman. While fans were sure he was dead by the end of the latter film, he’ll be making another DC comeback with the Flash movie. Confused? Apparently, so is Shannon.

Talking to Variety, Shannon reveals how he was perplexed when they asked him to play Zod in The Flash. He explains, “I was a little confused… I said, ‘As memory serves me, I think I died in ‘Man of Steel.’ Are they sure they got the right guy?’ But then they explained to me the whole multiverse phenomenon, which I was a little behind the times on that. I can’t say that I’m a huge consumer of this genre of films — not that I have anything against them. If I’m going to watch a movie, the odds are it’s not going to be one of those, but I sure love making them.”

Based on what we see in the trailer, the Flash alters the timeline so that there isn’t a Superman to stop Zod when he starts his invasion on Earth in Man of Steel; resulting in him teaming up with Batman to find Supergirl.

While Zod gets a lot of dramatic moments in Man of Steel, Shannon explains how his role is pretty much reduced in this one. He continues,[Zod’s] a little different in this film. He’s a little more… I don’t know how to put it. You don’t spend as much time with him, so you don’t really get to know as much about what he’s thinking. It’s not necessarily his movie. That’s the thing with these multiverse movies — you get a little bit of this and a little bit of that. But it’s really Ezra [Miller’s] movie.”

I guess we’ll just have to rewatch Man of Steel before The Flash releases. Heck, why don’t we rewatch all the Snyder films?

The Flash is set to hit theaters on June 16.
