Jack Black Reunites with Nacho Libre Director for Minecraft Movie

We know that Jason Momoa is expected to be the lead of the upcoming Minecraft movie, but it looks like another video game movie icon is going to be appearing in the film.

According to Deadline, Jack Black (The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) has joined the cast of Minecraft. What’s more, it’s said that he’ll be playing the role of the player character Steve. Steve doesn’t really come with a backstory in the game, so it’s a perfect character for Black to make entirely his own.

It’s also worth noting that the movie is directed by Jarred Hess, who is best known for his work on Napoleon Dynamite. This movie will actually have him reuniting with Black since the two had also worked together for Nickelodeon’s wrestling movie, Nacho Libre.

Here’s the description for the movie:

The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.

We don’t have a look at the movie yet, but I’m assuming that Momoa will be playing the part of the Ender Dragon with Emma Myers (Wednesday) playing the part of the lead. Other cast members for the film include Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.

Hess is actually one of my favorite directors, and while I can’t imagine him taking on a project like Minecraft, I’m hoping that he manages to inject some of his signature humor in the film. He’s pretty much like a less-artsy Wes Anderson, with the same kind of flair as Taika Waititi. I can’t wait to see him back at the helm again.

The Minecraft movie is set to release on April 4, 2025.
