DC fans always had a hunch that Ben Affleck’s Batman was making a reference to Darkseid in the DC Extended Universe’s Justice League. Now it looks like the fanbase has official confirmation about the reference from Zack Snyder himself.
A fan on Vero just recently asked about the moment Batman talks about “something darker” in Justice League, and Snyder gave a quick but clear response confirming that Darkseid had been in his plans for the DCEU before he stepped down from the rest of production for Justice League to mourn the loss of his daughter.
Ever since Batman v Superman, fans had the feeling that Snyder was moving towards a two-part Justice League story that would lead Batman, Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Mamoa) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) to Darkseid, the tyrannical ruler of Apokolips.
For those who aren’t familiar with the character, Darkseid was written as one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe and the character has always been considered one of the archenemies of the Justice League. A Superman villain, Darkseid’s goal is to conquer the universe and take away free-will, making the character a more fascist version of Marvel’s Thanos, if you will.
However, while many were anticipating Darkseid’s arrival in the DCEU, Snyder’s hold on the franchise was eventually cut off. Because of the untimely death of his daughter, the director decided to step down from his work on Justice League, leaving before the film could proceed with its reshoots. Now it seems like DC is taking on a different direction with Warner Brothers focusing on standalone movies like Aquaman and Shazam.
Aquaman makes its big, splashy premiere December 21, 2018.
