Willem Dafoe Talks ‘Justice League’ & Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’

Towards the end of last month multiple press outlets were fortunate enough to visit the set of Zack Synder’s Justice League movie, shooting in London. Alongside getting a plot synopsis, an official logo, and information surrounding Batman’s new tech and solo movie outing, one surprise reveal was the part Willem Dafoe would play in the film.

Dafoe’s role is that of Nuidis Vulko, an important adviser and friend to Aquaman in Atlantis, indicating the Atlanteans will play a key role in deciding whether their King should join the Justice League. In a recent interview with The Playlist (via Heroic Hollywood) Dafoe said he shot a few scenes in the movie and talked briefly about his co-star Gal Gadot who plays Wonder Woman.

“She looks good. (Laughs) I don’t want to talk about that. I’ve got so many movies to talk about. I’ll let them orchestrate the publicity on that movie. I’m happy to be a part of it and when it comes out I’ll be talking about it ad nausea. I shot part of it and I’ll go back and shoot some more. This is a DC Comics “Justice League” movie. Which is shooting now. Too soon to talk about.”

Dafoe was then asked about his role in Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man movie and whether he thinks that played a part in landing the role in Justice League, and whether it impacted his career. Dafoe portrayed the menacing Norman Osborn turned Green Goblin in the 2002 movie.

“I think “Spider-Man” helped terrifically in that respect. Y’know, my struggle is I try to make a certain type of a movie and some of those movies don’t get distributed widely. And if people don’t see you for a while it’s hard to follow your career. And as distribution gets kind of less creative the big movie takes all the interest of the people. So when you do a movie that’s widely distributed, popular and a good movie and what you do with it is regarded well that has to be good for your career.”

Raimi’s first Spider-Man outing was certainly well distributed, that is for sure. Let’s hope Willem Dafoe’s role in Justice League creates a similar sort of positivity in his career.

Justice League is set to release 17 November 2017.
