As previously teased, we finally have out first red band trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, and though several accounts on the internet have been pointing out Easter Eggs and details we’ve missed, the director himself Simon McQuoid has teamed up with IGN to do a breakdown of the trailer.
Watch the Mortal Kombat director discuss the trailer with IGN down here:
Though the first Mortal Kombat movie was known to be ridiculously goofy, it looks like McQuiod is going to be taking this reboot more seriously; but at the same time, he’s also going to make room for some levity. While the conflict between Sub-Zero and Scorpion looks serious, we should expect some comedy moments that the game really leaned into when it came out back in the 90’s. Though it does get ridiculously violent, I’m sure there are some things to laugh about in a B-movie sort of way.
Besudes that, we also have teasers and confirmations for certain characters like the ‘evil’ Sub-Zero as well as Scorpion’s fight that happens in the beginning of Mortal Kombat. We also get confirmation of the Outworld in the scene with Mileena, and hopefully we’ll get to see Shao Khan somewhere down the line.
All-in-all, I think the Mortal Kombat movie actually looks pretty fantastic. While I appreciate McQuoid taking some elements seriously, I’m hoping he doesn’t forget to just have fun with the film and give us some wacky violence.
Mortal Kombat is set to come out on HBO Max and select theaters on April 16.
