If you didn’t already know, the two Planet of the Apes films we’ve had in recent years are reboots of the 60s original. This isn’t obvious though, as the new films have steered away from the original plot. In the original series, we had humans crash landing onto a planet ruled by intelligent apes. Instead of a parallel universe, in the new films, the apes are gaining intelligence on our world. There isn’t a lot in common between the two versions; however, there have been plenty of nods to the original films. Yet, as EW reports, this time the rebooted franchise isn’t simply creating another tribute. This time they’re actually bringing an old character back.
Most of you probably didn’t follow the original series when it aired. In the show, Charlton Heston starred alongside Linda Harrison, who played a character called Nova. Concept art from the new film, released by EW and pictured below, features ape Luca and an unknown girl. It has been confirmed that the production is bringing Nova back. There’ll be some changes to her character, fitting her into the context of the new plot.
The biggest change, as you can see from the image, is that Nova is younger. Yet, this looks as though it’ll play into the plot of War for the Planet of the Apes well, as director Matt Reeves explains:
“The battle is not just between the humans and the apes, but in Caesar’s soul. The girl is his pull back to his empathy and — for lack of a better word — his human side.”
We already know Caesar will be going on a dangerous mission to save his band of apes. Now EW has some more details on exactly what Caesar will be doing in the film:
“Now years into the conflict, Caesar is a changed ape, battle-hardened and at risk of losing all sympathy for mankind. In a last-ditch effort to save his people, Caesar undertakes a desperate mission to find and kill the leader of the human forces, the fearsome and Kurtz-esque Colonel (Woody Harrelson).”
War of the Planet of the Apes premieres on July 14, 2017.
