The Tomb Raider Reboot made a strong start when they added Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander as the lead. We heard a rumour a few months ago that it could be aiming for a 2017 release date, but it’s not arriving that soon. We now have a confirmed date for Lara Croft’s next adventure, but could it have a major office rival?
Deadline and numerous other sites are reporting the film hits theatres on March 16, 2018. That does the studio over 18 months to add more talent to the film. That date is currently held by an untitled DC film, widely expected to be The Flash. As things stand there will still be a DCEU release that weekend, although it could be pulled.
Since Warner Bros. is partly producing the film, they may move their other big blockbuster away from that date. Given the recent director switch for The Flash, which saw Rick Famuyiwa take over, a change is entirely possible. Of course, Tomb Raider may well be able to hold its own. This has been a good week for fans of the franchise, with Rise of the Tomb Raider confirmed for release on PS4 later this year.
With Vikander on board, the film will have serious quality in the lead. Surely an actress of that calibre was told there’d be a strong team around her. Roar Uthaug is set to direct, with the story expected to be along the lines of the recent video game reboot. Tomb Raider, released in 2013, saw a young Lara’s origin story.
Fans won’t have to wait too long to see Vikander again, as she’s starring in Jason Bourne alongside Matt Damon in a few weeks’ time. After that, she lines up with Michael Fassbender in The Light Between the Oceans.
