5) A Link to the Past
A Link to the Past is a perfect sequel to the original Zelda game. While Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is the literal sequel to the original, that game was very different. It was more of a Final Fantasy-like RPG than a Zelda game it just didn’t have the same feeling the first did. A Link to the Past did everything the original did, but better. The items, the story, the overall presentation, everything was improved from the original in a big way.
Starting off just like the original, you have nothing, but you are called in a dream to Hyrule Castle. After making your way into the castle you find your uncle very badly injured and he hands you his sword and your adventure begins. A Link to the Past may have a bigger role on the franchise as whole than the original. Pretty much every game after it has followed it’s basic outline. Gather three pendants, spiritual stones, pearls, etc, than the game changes. You acquire the Master Sword and then stop Ganondorf from destroying Hyrule.
The inclusion of the Dark World allowed for exploration in a familiar, yet completely different world. The enemies were varied, and as soon as you enter the Dark World things got way more difficult. It’s a game that gets harder as you get better and is incredibly rewarding. With a plethora of items and upgrades there is a lot of reason to explore. The Zelda series owes a lot to A Link to the Past and is the best 2D Zelda game ever.
