8) The Legend of Zelda
The one that started it all. The Legend of Zelda quite simply changed gaming as we know it. The game thrusts you into the world with literally nothing, and doesn’t tell you where to go. After receiving a sword from an old man in a cave, your adventure begins and leaves you to your own devices. There is almost no direction at all, forcing you to explore. The land of Hyrule is yours to discover. My God, did we ever explore the heck out of it. The Legend of Zelda can be brutal and incredibly unforgiving and at times; overwhelming, even. Which is exactly why this game is as beloved as it is. There’s nothing like that feeling, after trying over and over to solve a puzzle, or beat a boss, when you finally actually do it. Zelda taketh and giveth.
Shigeru Miyamoto’s classic game introduces almost all the tropes of what makes a Zelda game a Zelda game. Exploration, items, exciting enemies, dungeons to overcome and an incredible sense of adventure. Then you add a princess in peril, the Triforce, Ganon, and most of all Link. It is an absolute classic and will always have a place in the hearts of gamers.
