Though the movie was a critical bomb, it was no mystery that Venom made a lot of money for Sony. A sequel has been announced for a while, and it looks like the film has already started shooting.
Tom Hardy himself had teased the start of production, but has deleted the IG post. Good thing some fans on Reddit were able to take a screenshot:
We don’t know why Hardy would take his post down, but it’s likely that Sony would like to keep everything under wraps. The post doesn’t really spoil anything about the film, but I have a wild guess about why it was removed.
Again, this is just speculation on my part, but I think Sony wants to re-negotiate what Venom’s connection to the MCU is. The first film was supposed to feature a cameo from Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, but it was removed as per the request of Disney (likely because they saw Venom and thought it was a shit show). Maybe with the sequel, Sony wants to finally confirm Venom’s connection to Spider-Man, and they don’t want Marvel finding out that they’ve already started shooting the film.
Again, that’s my guess. I have absolutely no idea what they have behind the scenes. I just want to make sense of why Sony would ask Hardy to take down his post. Maybe they want a bigger announcement? All we can really do is speculate.
For now, Venom 2 is set to come out on Oct. 2, 2020.
