We haven’t even gotten a full look at the Void/Sentry in Thunderbolts* yet, but we know that his powers look insane, essentially just turning people into dust in an instant.
As it turns out, this effect was inspired by a real-life tragedy in the form of the Hiroshima Bombings. This was confirmed by director Jake Schreier in an interview with Collider. He says:
“It definitely came from images from Hiroshima and those kinds of shadows. It was this feeling that we want everything in the film not to feel like it’s CG, even if we have some of the best visual effects companies in the world doing a ton of work on this movie.”
Here’s a comparison with the effect in the movie compared to the real-life photos:

It’s not entirely clear what the Void is capable of in the film, but I doubt that he’s actually killing people here. With the Sentry/Void expected to show up in Avengers: Doomsday, it would be hard to root for a character who is essentially a superhero mass shooter.
I speculate that he’s actually transporting people to another location, like the Negative Zone, and this could connect to the Fantastic Four and how they end up interacting with the main MCU timeline.
Then again, that’s just my guess. It’s possible that this guy really is out her dusting people en masse; but we’ll just have to wait and see till the film comes out.
Thunderbolts* is set to hit cinemas on May 1.
