We’ve all seen that awesome new trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, right? Well, if you thought that the film couldn’t be any cooler, we’ve got some news for you. Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is doing more than sitting in the director’s chair. As EW reports, he’s also playing one of Thor’s buddies, Korg, in the movie.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Korg, his character was a part of the Planet Hulk storyline. Appearing as a rock-like Kronan, Korg is also rock-like in nature. With Waititi and the crew developing the Planet Hulk storyline into Thor: Ragnarok, it seems only natural that Korg should appear in the film, too. Yet, speaking over on EW, Waititi says that he wanted to take a different angle on Thor’s newest friend:
“We wanted to change the idea of what a hulking guy made of rocks could be,” he shared. “He’s huge and heavy, but with a light soul. We wanted to make him funny and a relatable entry point into this world. And Thor needs friends.”
By the looks of the trailer, Thor doesn’t appear to have many friends left after Hella destroys Asgard. According to EW, as gladiators forced to fight on the planet Sakaar, Korg and Thor will join forces and become allies quickly.
Looking at Waititi, you wouldn’t think he’d be playing a big, rocky giant. However, the director didn’t orginally envisage playing Korg:
“Obviously, being made of rocks, we wanted somebody like The Rock to play him, but there wasn’t enough chicken or salmon in Australia to sustain he and Chris,” joked Waititi at a Monday press event at Marvel’s Los Angeles office. “I never thought I’d be playing the most lovable character in the film.”
This isn’t Waititi’s first time appearing in a superhero movie, either. The actor and director also had a small role in DC‘s Green Lantern. With a corker of a trailer, Thor: Ragnarok looks like it’s in safe hands. We’ll get to see Waititi’s rendition of Korg in all his glory when the film premieres on November 3rd.
