Whether it’s happening this year or in the next five years, we know that Kathleen Kennedy can’t run Lucasfilm forever, and there’s already been discussions about who should take over her role as Lucasfilm president.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, there are already some candidates being considered, and they are Lucasfilm production head Carrie Beck and — to nobody’s surprise — chief creative officer Dave Filoni.
Though Beck has been involved with multiple Star Wars projects over the past few years including The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka, it’s really Filoni that everyone has eyes on—especially since he’s been in the spotlight since The Clone Wars and Rebels.
What’s interesting is, some do think that Filoni may know too much about Star Wars for his own good, and it could lead to him alienating broader audiences. With the recent success of Andor on Disney+, an insider said about Filoni, “He’s not the Andor guy, he’s the Ahsoka guy.”
Admittedly, when Andor was coming out with its last season, a lot of fans can’t help but compare how much ‘better’ the material was compared to Filoni who seemed to be more focused on making references to expanded material than actually making a better story at hand.
If anything, some say that Filoni is better in the creative position where he can just focus on making more shows. The job of the Lucasfilm president is not so creative as they have to find a way to balance the creative and business side of the brand—something Filoni may not want to do.
I’m all up for someone to come from the outside, but what I hope is that whoever replaces her, it will be Kennedy who picks her successor.
