The lead-up to this announcement has been extraordinary – with teases from the cast, a trailer, and new information – but now Bruce Timm’s animated adaption of Alan’s Moore’s classic work finally has a release date. We have Amazon to thank for the news, as the site has Batman: The Killing Joke’s release date set at Tuesday, August 2. The Blu-ray/DVD/UltraViolet Combo Pack is currently available for pre-order at the price of $24.98, with just the DVD copy coming in at $14.99. Check out the gorgeous box art, inspired by the graphic novel’s iconic cover, below.

The film was recently confirmed to have an R-rating, and will open with a 15 minute prologue focusing on Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. The prologue is said to give the character a much needed backstory prior to the narrative’s events.

Batman: The Killing Joke will be the first DC animated film to get an R-rating, though Flashpoint Paradox was probably cutting it close. Of course, this is nothing new to Batman as the final game in the Rocksteady trilogy, Batman: Arkham Knight, launched with a Mature rating. It too had elements of The Killing Joke in it that inevitably pushed the series out of its typical “T” for Teen rating.

It’s so fitting that it will hit store shelves just three days prior to Suicide Squad’s release in theaters. With an extended preview of the film scheduled for San Diego Comic-Con, this is going to be a great summer for Joker fans.
