We’re getting a total of two DC films next year, and one of them is the Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix. For months we’ve been getting some interesting set photos and videos, but now we have news that production has finally wrapped.
This was confirmed by Daily Mail, who says that Phoenix was spotted both as Arthur Fleck and the Joker shooting a scene in a steep stairway in Brooklyn, New York.
What’s also notable is that the scene also includes Zazie Beetz, who is suspected to be playing Fleck’s wife. In the scene it looks like she’s walking away with her daughter, and I’m guessing that she’ll also be related to Fleck in some way.
My guess is, this is a point in the movie where things get really down for Fleck, and he’ll revisit it at some as a different man—the Joker.
Despite the DCEU getting a bad rap in the box office, I think it was actually a pretty balls-y move on WB’s part to introduce us to an alternate timeline. If this film succeeds, we could be looking at several one-offs like Superman: Red Son or Batman: Crimson Mist, and they would all have a different actor cast—just like how comics have a different art style with each character.
Personally, I’m hoping that director Todd Phillips is just planning Joker to be a standalone film. I would hate for the movie to be some parallel timeline that plays along with the main DCEU. Though a lot of people didn’t like his characterization, I think Jared Leto’s Joker is still worth exploring as we move forward. It’s kind of unfair to snatch the opportunity away from Leto just because his character wasn’t written well.
Catch Joker in theaters Oct. 4, 2019.
