Director Matt Reeves is one busy man. Firstly, he’s busy promoting War for the Planet of the Apes before it hits cinema screens. Next, Reeves will also be taking the director’s chair in the new Batman movie. But it doesn’t stop there. In a recent interview with Fandango via Heroic Hollywood, Reeves says that he has a vision for a whole trilogy of Batfleck-led movies.
Here’s what Reeves had to say when asked about his direction of The Batman and whether it would see a new trilogy of movies.
“I have ideas about an arc, but really, the important thing is just to start… you have to start with one. You know, you have to start with a story that begins something. And I would be lying if I could tell you that the arcs of Apes was already planned out, because it simply wasn’t; it’s one of those things where that character was so potent, and the possibility was embedded from the beginning, but exactly how you’ve got from A to Z is not something that existed.”
Of course, Reeves would be following in the footsteps of the massive Christopher Nolan Batman films. These movies saw Christian Bale’s famous take on the Dark Knight and an award-winning performance from Heath Ledger’s Joker. Yet, once Nolan completed his vision, the studio decided to move away from the more isolated Batman of his era. Instead, they’ve rebooted the franchise, with Ben Affleck taking the Bat into a bigger expanded universe.
The Nolan-led Dark Knight trilogy saw DC and Warner Bros. rake in a hefty fortune. Yet, could the studio pull it off again so soon? ComicBookMovie reported recently that Reeves is keen to do something very different to Christian Bale’s caped crusader.
In the interview with New Trailer Buzz, the director said that he was keen to scale back The Batman, returning him back to a plot with a more noir, detective-genre feel. This would be a break from the recent trilogy, where we saw endless tension, big explosions and a heap of action. Yet, this would be more in-line with the comics and could definitely win over fans.
