The casting news just keeps dropping for Matt Reeves’ The Batman. After word came out that Zoe Kravitz is playing Catwoman, and Jonah Hill has exited talks, we now have someone officially cast to play one of Batman’s oldest villains – Riddler.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Looper actor Paul Dano has been cast as the Riddler in the movie. Director Matt Reeves has also confirmed that his identity won’t be Edward Nygma, but Edward Nashton. Here’s the post:

Though Nygma is the most common alter ego of the Riddler in the comics, there’s actually a version of the Riddler that was originally named Ed Nashton before changing it to Nygma to better fit the homophone; you see, Edward Nygma could be E. Nygma, as in enigma, meaning “mystery”. Wordplay is fun, you see.

Going back to Dano though, I think he’s a pretty great choice to play the part. Though he mostly does “good guys” for his films, he can play creepy and complex when he needs to. Just look at this scene from Ruby Sparks where Dano plays an author who has somehow created his dream girl through his writing. The whole film plays like a typical rom-com until this scene:

We don’t know how Reeves plans to treat the Riddler for his films, but hopefully he won’t just be some kind of silly buffoon like Jim Carrey’s version from the 90s.

Catch Dano in The Batman when it hits theaters June 25, 2021.
