Rumor: The Alien Covenant Sequel Might Be Dead At Fox

We’ve always been fans of the Alien franchise even when Alien: Covenant proved to be a letdown. But now it appears the franchise may be dead.  A new rumor making the rounds is that Fox has wholly scrapped plans for Alien: Awakening the sequel to Alien: Covenant. A person going by the name of HumanMedia started this rumor on the Blu-Ray.com forums by saying:

“The sequel to Covenant was originally due to start preproduction this month in Sydney. After the box office results filming was canceled, and a warehouse storage unit full of stuff was auctioned off a few months ago. So the original plan of pumping out another quickly has definitely changed with no immediate plans for anything.”

This seems to fit with the statements Ridley Scott had made about wanting to start filming an Alien movie in the next year. This would mean pre-production would have to start now. However, with Alien Covenant having only earned $240 million worldwide on a $97 million budget it’s likely that Fox scrapped it on that alone.

That aside, in a recent interview, Scott says they’re going to make the sequel and that it’s going to be in a new direction.

“We are [going to make another], we are. I think what we have to do is gradually drift away from the alien stuff. People say, ‘You need more alien, you need more face pulling, need more chest bursting,’ so I put a lot of that in Covenant and it fitted nicely. But I think if you go again you need to start finding another solution that’s more interesting.”

Now with Disney’s recent purchase of Fox set to shake things up, this movie probably needs to happen relatively soon, or it may not ever happen at all. Disney is currently mulling over which Fox franchises it wants to reboot, and Alien with an R rating might be one it wants to boot.  However, if Disney is willing to save Deadpool with its R rating, there could still be hope that the mouse won’t kill the franchise so until it’s confirmed all we can do is wait.

With that said do you think the Alien franchise should keep going or should Ridley Scott let it die? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
