Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man may be getting movies soon, and Illumination is currently wanting in on the video game adaptation market. News has it that the studio that brought us the Minions is currently working on adapting a film based on Nintendo’s favorite plumber Super Mario.
“We are keeping him front and center in the creation of this film… I’ve rarely seen that happen with any adaptation where the original creative voice is being embraced like we’re embracing Miyamoto. There’s a history in Hollywood of people believing that they know better than the people responsible for a property. I’ve made that mistake before.”
Any experienced moviegoer knows that video game adaptations usually don’t fare well when it comes to being turned into films, but the story could be very different when it comes to the animated medium. Meledandri says that he wants to keep the film close to the source material, and seeing how Illumination’s adaptation of The Grinch looks like it jumped straight out of the books, I think Super Mario Bros won’t have any trouble being translated into film. Meledandri continues:
“It’s an ambitious task… The challenge is taking things that are so thin in their original form and finding depth that doesn’t compromise what generations of fans love about Mario, but also feels organic to the iconography and can support a three-act structure.”
With the last Super Mario movie being a total bomb from the 90s, I’m sure the bar isn’t set very high for this film from the get-go. If anything, I’m sure the kids are going to love it, but it would be interesting if it got more people who didn’t play the games to be more invested in the character.
Super Mario Bros is aiming for a release in 2022.
