After a long summer of resurrected franchises, we’re getting something more original in Suicide Squad next month. With just weeks until DC releases the third film in their new universe, there’s a notable restraint in promotion. Unlike Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice it seems like Warner Bros. has decided to hold some of the film back for theatres. You can see that in the trailer below, while we’ve also gotten quotes from Will Smith on his role in the film.
This new international trailer for Suicide Squad doesn’t have much new footage, but it does show off the tone we’re expecting. After dreary first look at Comic-Con this time last year, there’s much more colour and fun on show in this tease. Hopefully the films ends up being this enjoyable.
There’s a lot riding on this for WB. They’ve had mixed reviews to their first two films in the DC Extended Universe. With two other multi-million dollar films in production and post-production, they can’t afford for Suicide Squad to fall below expectations.
Will Smith has a taken a gamble on this film too, as he looks to get his career back after a disappointing turn. He clearly made the right choice avoiding Independence Day: Resurgence, but what inspired him to take this role? He recently sat down with EW to discuss his role as Deadshot:
I had never played a character that legitimately didn’t give a f—. It’s very freeing not having to carry the moral spine of the movie. I couldn’t find a model to understand what would make someone comfortable killing another person for money. David walked me through that. He found a book for me (The Anatomy of Motive by John Douglas), and I worked through getting into the mind of serial killers. Once I accepted the [notion the author puts forth] that it feels good, that really exploded the idea in my mind of Deadshot.
You can see Suicide Squad in theatres on August 5.
