Remember that Dark Empire story line mentioned earlier in the Snoke theories? Well that same story is part of the basis for this next theory, Luke Skywalker turns to the dark side. Dark Empire was a series of comics published by Dark Horse Comics from 1991 to 1992. The name typically identifies Dark Empire as well as the two sequels Dark Empire II and Empire’s End. In this series, the Galactic Empire is reborn and led by a resurrected Emperor Palpatine in numerous clone bodies. Luke Skywalker meets the Emperor reborn and eventually takes his place as the Emperor’s apprentice, falling to the dark side. Ultimately Luke is brought back to the light side with the help of his family and friends, and defeats the Emperor reborn with the help of his sister Leia.

The idea of Luke Skywalker turning to the dark side is hardly a new one. Mark Hamill has been vocal about playing an evil Luke Skywalker. For instance, back in 2005 on an episode of IFC’s Dinner for Five, Hamill recounted the time he pitched the idea of an evil Luke Skywalker to George Lucas during the production of Return of the Jedi.

“As an actor that would be more fun to play. I just thought that’s the way it was going from when we finished [Empire]. I figured that’s what will be the pivotal moment. I’ll have to come back, but it will be I have Han Solo in my cross-hairs and I’ll be about to kill him or about to kill the Princess or about to kill somebody that we care about. It’s an old cornball movie, like World War II movies.” The panel also included Kevin Smith, Jason Lee, Stan Lee, and none other than J.J. Abrams himself. Take a look below:

Furthermore, let’s remember during an interview with ABC News earlier this year in April, Hamill was asked if Luke makes a turn to the dark side in The Last Jedi. His response? “It’s possible, anything’s possible.” Hamill is known for joking around on social media, so this could just be an effort to keep people interested (like we’re not already interested enough). But, you never know. There has been plenty of foreshadowing throughout the Skywalker Saga to warrant a potential fall to the dark side.
