J.J. Abrams had rejuvenated the Star Trek franchise back in 2009, but the status of the fourth Trek film in the Kelvin timeline is nothing but ambiguous. Karl Urban, who plays Dr. Leonard McCoy, however, is confident that the movie will begin shooting sometime next year.

Talking to JoBlo, Urban explains:

“It’s really a question for Paramount (laughs). But, that being said, I have such a blast working on those Star Trek movies. You know, that cast, we’re like family at this point. I’m pretty confident within, hopefully, the next year, that we’ll be back on the set.”

Originally, the fourth movie was said to have included Chris Hemsworth returning as Kirk’s father, but after news came out that Quentin Tarantino was working on a Trek movie, Hemsworth admitted that he hadn’t received any updates then.

Whatever the next Star Trek movie is, a lot of fans have a feeling it will have something to do with time travel. Tarantino has expressed his interest before in doing a time travel story for Trek, and (beside multi-dimensional travel) what other way could they possibly bring George Kirk back?

With Kirk’s struggle in Star Trek: Beyond having something to do with living up to his father’ legacy, it would certainly be interesting to see him actually come face to face with the father he never knew. Besides that, just imagine the star power of having both Chrises Pine and Hemsworth being onscreen together. Add Chris Pratt to this film, and everyone’s minds would explode.

Star Trek 4 has not been officially announced.
