For several years, Venom had an on-again off-again relationship with big screen productions. Directors were hired, screenwriters were tapped, and various incarnations were pitched; all were scrapped and cancelled. Now it seems Sony is ready to try again with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing and Dante Harper penning the script.
Venom and the upcoming Spider-Man film (a Sony and Marvel co-production) are to be two unrelated and completely separate entities, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Not only will the Venom movie not exist within the same universe as Spider-Man, it is also set to launch its own franchise. It remains to be seen which incarnation of Venom the film(s) will utilize. The symbiotic character could be an all out villain, as his original comic appearances depicted, or he could be an anti-heroic/good guy composite.
There will be tons to learn about the project as casting, production, and eventually shooting moves forward. The months and years ahead are sure to be frustrating, drawn out, and exciting all at the same time.
