Sonic the Hedgehog Sequel Officially Greenlit

Though the first trailer was widely reviled, Paramount was able to pick things up and Sonic the Hedgehog became a hit when it was released earlier this year. While the status of a sequel had been up in the air for the past few months, we have news that a sequel has officially been greenlit.

As per Variety, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is once again bringing Jeff Fowler back to the director’s chair with Pay Casey and Josh Miller. We don’t have a main story for the follow-up yet, but I have a feeling that Fowler and his team already have something in mind, what with all the set-ups that they laid toward the end.

We know that Tails is now looking for Sonic in Green Hills, and it’s possible that we could meet some of Sonic’s other friends from the video games. What’s more, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) now has a video-game accurate look, and it’s very possible that he’ll find a way out of his mushroom world in time to seek revenge on Sonic.

While the relationship with Sonic and ‘Donut Lord’ (James Marsden) is supposedly at the center of the first movie, I think that the sequel could actually do away with human characters and just focus on Sonic’s colorful friends. No offense, but the human characters in these films always tend to be boring, and I’m sure kids will have plenty to identify with characters like Knuckles, Tails, and Amy Rose.

We don’t know when a sequel is set to come out, but hopefully we get an update before the year ends.
