The response was overwhelmingly negative when we got our first look at the Sonic the Hedgehog movie that Paramount had decided to push back the film to 2020 to give the artists time to redesign the character. Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) is voicing the titular Sonic, and he gives us a tease of what to expect from the new look.

Check it out:

Though everyone loved the look of Jim Carrey’s Robotnik, a lot of people couldn’t stand the ‘realistic’ look for Sonic the Hedgehog. Instead of embracing the cartoon-y Japanese design, the movie made it look like Sonic was like a small guy in a fur suit. A lot of people also can’t stand that they gave the character human teeth.

From some angles, I actually think the character is okay, but admittedly at the first reveal it’s pretty jarring. Hopefully director Jeff Fowler manages to make things right this second time around, and hopefully Paramount also compensates the VFX artists who are probably under a lot of pressure to make a better Sonic the Hedgehog.

Let’s also hope someone picks some appropriate music in the next trailer as well. Who the hell thought Gangster’s Paradise was the best soundtrack for a Sonic trailer?

Catch Sonic the Hedgehog when it comes out Valentine’s Day 2020.
