Simon Pegg Says the Star Trek Franchise has Lost Its Momentum

Star Trek Beyond was actually a pretty great film, but the movie had underperformed in the box office, and the franchise is currently stagnant. Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the films and wrote Beyond has admitted that Trek has kind of lost its fire since the last film.

Talking to GamesRadar, Pegg commented:

“I don’t feel like the last one… They didn’t really take advantage of the 50th anniversary. The regimen at the time dropped the ball on the promo of the film. And we’ve lost momentum. I think losing Anton [Yelchin] was a huge blow to our little family, and our enthusiasm to do another one might have been affected by that. So I don’t know.”

Probably the only recent surge in interest when it came to the Trek films recently was when it was said that Quentin Tarantino was attached to develop a film in the Kelvin Timeline. Tarantino has since opened up about not directing the movie, and Trek had gone stagnant once more.

Personally, I would have loved it if they decided to continue the story they were setting up with Beyond. It was said that the fourth movie was going to have Kirk, with time travel, run into his father George with Chris Hemsworth reprising the part. I think it would have been a heart-warming story, but since the film bombed, Trek is now trying to come up with a different direction.

While the movies have slowed down, it’s worth noting that the TV shows have been more lively than ever. We have Star Trek Discovery and the newly released Star Trek: Picard. Fingers crossed a new movie finds its way to cinemas soon.

Star Trek 4 has not been officially announced.
