Silver Sable/Black Cat Movie in the Works at Sony

After the recent confirmation of Venom solo movieSony is plowing ahead with their plans for an extended Spider-Man universe. Even if they, er, can’t actually use Spider-Man after they lent him out to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the studio is finally moving forward with their long-discussed female Spider-Man spin-off movie. The film will feature a team-up of two anti-heroines from the Spider-Man mythos – namely, Silver Sable and Black Cat.

Christopher Yost is writing the script, which is good news for superhero fans. Yost contributed to two of the Thor movies and was the showrunner of the popular Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes animated series. Even better is the fact that he is working off an earlier draft from Lisa Joy, co-creator of acclaimed sci-fi series Westworld.

For those who don’t know, Black Cat could be described as Spider-Man’s counterpart to Catwoman. Felicia Hardy is an expert cat burglar and has functioned as an enemy, ally and occasional love interest for Peter Parker over the years. She was created in 1979 by Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard. The character appeared in a very different incarnation in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as played by Rogue One‘s Felicity Jones. It is hard to say whether that makes Jones more or less likely to play the role again here.

Silver Sable, meanwhile, is a highly skilled mercenary who takes down war criminals. Though she is more trigger-happy than Spider-Man, she has nevertheless often served as his ally on several occasions. She made her first appearance in the comics in 1985 and was created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz.

A female-led Spider-Man spin-off was one of those that was set to take place in the Amazing Spider-Man universe before the lacklustre reception to TASM 2 forced Sony to rethink the plans. Perhaps emboldened by DC’s own female hero team-up movie, Gotham City SirensSony has decided to reboot the project.

Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing the as-yet-untitled project. It is believed that they are hoping to contract a director soon.
