The plot of Ragnarok has yet to be officially released, though we do know the key players who will be returning. When we left Asgard last time, Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) duplicitous brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) was posing as Odin (Sir Anthony Hopkins) on the throne of Asgard. As such, he gave Thor his permission to return to Earth. The whole time Thor was never aware of the switcheroo taking place. We were left to wonder what the hell had happened to Odin. Was he dead? Was he in a prison cell? What did Loki do with him?
Whatever it was, it must have been quiet as there really hasn’t been any word out of the ordinary from Asgard since. In fact, twice Lady Sif (Jamie Alexander) has been sent to Earth by “Odin” to hunt down fugitives on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. “Odin” also sent her and Volstagg (Ray Stevenson) to take the Aether, one of the six Infinity Stones, to The Collector for safe-keeping.
Thor has also enjoyed some time taking care of Midgardian issues. There were no alarms from home until last year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Burdened by visions he received thanks to Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) he visited a mystical pool, accompanied by Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård). He has peculiar and frightening visions of the end-of-days variety. In them, he sees Heimdall (Idris Elba) with crazy, zombie eyes during some sort of bacchanalian feast saying Thor is the destroyer and all of Asgard is dead. Additionally, he is possessed temporarily by the Norn. They’re basically the Norse equivalent of the Fates. While possessed Selvig records the Norn’s answers to his questions (see the deleted scene below). This alerts him to the growing doom surrounding the Infinity Stones.
.How much of this subplot will play into Ragnarok is still up in the air. One thing it did accomplish was get Thor back to Asgard. In so doing, he’ll most definitely discover his brother’s ruse. However we get the feeling he’s going to have bigger fish to fry than just dealing with Loki’s shenanigans…again.
Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, as does Tom Hiddleston as Loki. Sir Anthony Hopkins (Odin) and Idris Elba (Heimdall) are also returning. New additions to the cast include Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Cate Blanchett (Hela), Karl Urban (Skurge), Jeff Goldblum (Grandmaster) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie).
Thor: Ragnarok will be in theaters November 3, 2017.
