There has been a Mamma Mia film for each decade since the 2000s, and though some fans thought that this would be the end to the franchise, it looks like a third movie could be in the works—and they have one of the biggest pop-stars being eyed to star.
According to Deadline, there have been rumblings of a third Mamma Mia! film in the works, and Sabrina Carpenter is being eyed to star. We don’t know who she could be playing, but it’s possible that they could be moving forward in the timeline.
For context, the first Mamma Mia! had focused on the relationship between a mother (Meryl Streep) and her daughter (Amanda Seyfried) who had to guess which of her mother’s former lovers was her father. The sequel had killed off Streep’s character, but then the story followed Seyfried’s Sophie going into her own journey of motherhood.
Seeing that Sophie’s baby was a boy, it wouldn’t make sense for Carpenter to be playing Sophie’s child, but it’s possible that Sophie could have several children, and Carpenter could be one of them.
Personally, I’m curious just how much of Abba’s discography they’ll be able to milk, seeing as the second movie already reused a lot of the most popular songs that were already in the first movie. As long as the story is good though, I think a lot of fans would be willing to line up and see the film—plus it doesn’t hurt that Carpenter herself could be a major draw.
A Mamma Mia! 3 hasn’t been officially announced, but they better get to work on it soon while Carpenter is as popular as she is.
