Running Point Trailer Featuring Kate Hudson Looks Like Netflix’s Version of Winning Time

HBO may have cancelled their basketball drama Winning Time, but now Netflix has their own spin on basketball management with Running Point from executive producer Mindy Kaling (The Office).

Check out the trailer starring Kate Hudson:

Here’s the logline for the series: Isla Gordon, overlooked her whole life, is appointed President of the LA Waves basketball team, a family business. She aims to prove she was the right choice despite skepticism.

Besides Hudson, the cast also includes Brenda Song, Max Greenfield, and Scott MacArthur.

Looking at the synopsis, it’s possible that the series could be based on the life of Jeanie Buss, who is the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. Jeanie’s father was Jerry Buss (who was the central character of Winning Time), and after he died, control went over to his children. Jeanie, however, ended up becoming the team president and was the first female controlling owner to guide the Lakers to an NBA championship in 2020.

It’s not clear if Running Point is meant to be a loose adaptation of Jeanie’s story, but the basketball team in LA, the siblings who get control of the team, and her inheriting the spot while also being a hard worker all feels like too much of a coincidence.

Maybe it just opened up the series to be more playful with the story, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix didn’t want to pay any royalties to the Lakers with them being such a huge brand.

Catch Running Point when it premieres on Netflix on Feb. 27.
