We still have no official announcement on the Kenobi spinoff film, but a new rumor is suggesting that we may see Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi earlier than expected.
According to The Sun, sources in LA are saying that McGregor is shooting a part in Star Wars Episode IX in secret. This isn’t too surprising, as he did come back to do a voice cameo in The Force Awakens. It would be great if he could come back for Episode IX.
There are multiple ways to have Obi-Wan come back, and the most obvious is a Force ghost. Of course, they would have to justify why he is the younger version of Kenobi and not old man Ben from the Original Trilogy. Other than that, Obi-Wan can return as a recorded hologram in a Jedi holocron, or maybe be part of a “Force vision”—the same one that Rey gets when he holds Anakin’s lightsaber for the first time.
A lot of people have been clamoring for a Kenobi movie, but so far, Lucasfilm has yet to make an official announcement. If Obi-Wan were to appear in Episode IX, though, I think it would build up the hype for the spinoff—much like Maul’s appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Star Wars Episode IX is slated for a release on Dec. 20, 2019.
