Ever since HBO Max had announced that they would be releasing Zack Snyder’s original version of Justice League, DCEU fans had started campaigning for the release of David Ayer’s original Suicide Squad as well with #ReleaseTheAyerCut. With support coming out from every corner of the fandom, the campaign just got a boost from one of the movie’s main stars.

Talking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) had revealed that she hadn’t seen Ayer’s original version of Suicide Squad yet, but she would very much want to watch it. She says, “I never saw the Ayer Cut. I know we shot a lot of stuff that didn’t make it into the movie. I would be very curious myself.”

We only have bits and pieces of what went down behind the scenes, but the way fans put it together, it seemed that WB wasn’t pleased with the reception for Batman v Superman and opted to make Suicide Squad, which looked to be a dark and gritty film, something brighter and more upbeat. They had taken the film and had it edited by studio that made the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer, and we got the theatrical cut. The closest thing we have to the original film is the I Started a Joke trailer that came out at SDCC.

Though Ayer had done his job when promoting the movie, he has since been very vocal about how much his vision was canned. Probably one of the more alluring parts about this cut is Jared Leto’s Joker, and Ayer says that nobody has seen Leto’s true performance yet, which will be in his cut of Suicide Squad.

We don’t know if WB is considering #ReleaseTheAyerCut yet, but fans speculate that it could be possible if Zack Snyder’s Justice League performs well on release.

Catch Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max sometime in 2021. Margot Robbie returns as Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad which comes out Aug. 6, 2021.
