This isn’t the first time that 20th Century Fox have tried to do the Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix storyline. A classic story in the comic books, the story centres around Jean’s corruption into a dark and powerful being. We originally saw her back in 2006, in X-Men: The Last Stand. However, a reboot is well-overdue. And not only are we getting a fresh Dark Phoenix, it’ll be closer to the comic book too.
Through the X-Men: Origins movies, the studio have rebooted the series. X-Men: Days of Future Past also gave the studio a chance to split from the original trilogy, creating an entirely new story. This means that they have the flexibility to create the Dark Phoenix plot in all its glory again. And in 2018, we’ll be seeing the firebird that is Dark Phoenix back in action.
Could there be a returning mutant from Apocalypse? Speculation has been mounting about the return of Psylocke, one of the main villains from the mutants’ last outing in Apocalypse. However, as always with rumours, take this with a pinch of salt. As ComicBookMovie states:
“Internet detectives have looked at Olivia Munn’s Instagram and Facebook accounts and determined that the former Attack of the Show co-host is likely reprising her role as Psylocke in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.”
Of course, this has yet to be confirmed by the studio. The article also mentions that Munn could be doing re-shoots for her up and coming role in The Predator instead. Still, Munn’s character Psylocke was pretty bad-ass in Apocalypse. Furthermore, we could well be looking at a team-up with the X-Men if she is returning. Let’s face it, Professor X and co. are going to need all the help that they can get if they want to stop Jean Grey.
We’ll sit tight for now until we know more.
