If you were lucky enough to grow up with Power Rangers, you’ll remember the arm-flailing, excitable robot, Alpha 5. Until recently, the new Power Rangers reboot had only given us Rebecca Banks as Rita Repulsa and Bryan Cranston as Zordon. Within the last few days, however, Lionsgate has given us a preview of the new, sleek zords and we also have some details about who will be playing Alpha 5, the Rangers’ trusty robotic companion.
According to Collider, Bill Hader will be voicing the new Alpha 5 — trusty robot to the Rangers in Zordon’s HQ. Hader has starred in roles for the IFC‘s series Documentary Now! and has an up-and-coming directing debut in a new TV movie, Barry. Barry sees Hader playing a hitman, who gets caught up in the Los Angeles theatre arts scene.
’90s Power Rangers gave us bold colours and a pretty tacky feel. However, the 2017 Power Rangers reboot has already been compared with The Hunger Games. Will a darker, more adult tone mean that Alpha 5 loses his lightning bolt chest plate and wide plate-shaped head? With no images released yet, we can’t be too sure. Furthermore, it’s also unclear as to whether Alpha 5 will be crying ‘Aye-yi-yi-yi-yi!’ This famous phrase defined the original Alpha 5 and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Yet, in order to make it appealing to a new generation, Lionsgate could have different plans for this robot sidekick.
With Power Rangers out on March 24th, more details should arrive soon. For now, though, we’ll have to make do with these tantalising posters featuring the new zords.
Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G and Dacre Montgomery star as the Power Rangers. Elizabeth Banks takes up the role as the Rangers’ main villain Rita Repulsa, whilst Bryan Cranston plays the Rangers’ mentor, Zordon.
