Though a lot of people were worried that Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko left Netflix’s live-action Airbender series, it all came together last month when it was announced that the duo would head their own Avatar Studios division on Nickelodeon. While we don’t know exactly what they have planned for the franchise, Nickelodeon gives us an update on what they want out of Airbender.

Talking to Deadline, Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins said:

“We are in the early stages of developing and exploring what we are calling an entire Avatar Airbender universe… Mike and Bryan are hard at work, and I think that universe will encompass definitely a theatrical film, animation, certainly multiple TV series and probably multiple films. I think we will be ready very soon to tell the world what is coming first but we are not there yet because we’re in early stages of creative development.”

We don’t know what to expect with this upcoming theatrical film, but I am excited to see what else is in store for Avatar. With the franchise’s scope, there is just so much potential for the property to be as huge as Star Wars, what with multiple TV series, movies, video games, and comics that could be set in the Avatar universe.

Personally, I’m still open to getting a live-action Avatar property, but I think it’s misguided to try and re-tell the story of The Last Airbender. If anything, they can probably make a full movie and just tell an original story of the grown-up Team Avatar (be it Aang’s or Korra’s). How about a samurai epic with Avatar Wan? When it comes to live-action bending, Nick better be ready to dish out some serious cash for movie-level VFX.

We don’t know when the first Avatar Studios project comes out, but hopefully we get something by 2022.
