Natalie Portman stuns in Teaser Trailer for Sci-Fi Epic, Annihilation

Paramount Pictures just released their teaser trailer for the sci-fi epic, Annihilation and its got a lot to say.

Natalie Portman plays Lena, a biologist whose husband disappears. She puts her name forward for an expedition into an environmental disaster zone but does not quite find what she’s expecting. The expedition team is made up of the biologist, an anthropologist (Gina Rodriquez), a psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and a surveyor, played by Tessa Thompson.

The trailer sees Lena entering the danger zone and explaining to a quarantine worker what she saw. Of course, like any suspenseful sci-fi film, she doesn’t know yet. The exterior looks to be very bright and colourful with some aspects of the trailer mimicking James Cameron’s Avatar. Lena also describes the task of finding the creature or thing as a “suicide mission” hinting that the film may take a deadly turn. Many aspects of the trailer appear to show the film as a thriller including the close up of Lena’s terrified gaze and Gina Rodriguez’s action stance. Although only a teaser trailer, the small clip does show quite a bit of footage and gives us a clear look at what kind of genre and film it will be.

Early talks for the film began in 2015 with Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton both in line. However, it was later revealed that Gina Rodriguez and Tessa Thompson would join the cast instead. The book in which Annihilation is adapted from is a trilogy series. So, we could potentially see more of these films if they do well critically and financially.

The film is written and directed by Alex Garland from Ex-Machina and is based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy. It stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac. Annihilation will see its release in cinemas in the UK on February 23, 2018.
