Hollywood has a history of terrible video game movies, but that hasn’t stopped them from trying time and time again. This time, New Line is pushing forward with their Mortal Kombat reboot, and they’ve found someone to play the ice ninja Sub-Zero.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has cast Joe Taslim (The Raid) to play Sub-Zero. If you’ve played the game, you know that Sub-Zero famously has a brother from the same clan with the same powers. It’s unclear which character Taslim is playing in Mortal Kombat, but I have no doubt they’re going to be making good use of his martial arts skills.

Taslim is the one playing the cop in this scene:

So far, Taslim is the first person to be officially cast in the film, so I have a feeling Sub-Zero is going to be the protagonist. Then again, Liu Kang has always been considered as the hero of this franchise, so I bet they still want him in this movie. With Sub-Zero though, it’s a given that his rival Scorpion has to be in the movie as well.

Mortal Kombat is being produced by James Wan (Aquaman) and is being directed by veteran commercial director Simon McQuioid. We don’t have an official plot for the film yet, but we do know that the script comes from Greg Russo. It’s likely there could still be some changes as the pre-production process goes.

We don’t know when New Line is ready to officially unveil their Mortal Kombat movie, but hopefully we get something before the year ends. My guess is SDCC 2019 later this month.
