Minions are everywhere. You can’t walk into a room or browse the Internet without a minion staring back at you. Of course, these cute one-eyed creatures have Despicable Me to thank for their fame. It’s not just Minions who have Despicable Me to thank though – so do Universal Pictures, who’ve made $2.5 billion out of the franchise, so far. That’s before we’ve even taken merchandise into the equation.
That being said, are we surprised that Universal is bringing out a third instalment in the series? You can see the trailer for the new film below, along with new images. As well as Minions, main character Gru, voiced by Steve Carell will also be returning, along with twin brother, Dru.
Gru will be facing villain Balthazar Bratt, played by Trey Parker. Collider describe Bratt as: “a former child star “driven to supervillainy as a result of the abrupt cancelation of his TV series when he hit puberty.”” Designing a character like Balthazar gives the studio a lot of opportunity.
As we can see from the trailer, Bratt’s character is so random it’s genius. Firstly, his hair and power shoulders are fantastic. Secondly, we see him taking out guards on-board a ship with bubblegum and dance fighting with Gru once he arrives. In conclusion, the plot behind Despicable Me 3 sounds just as absurd as before.
While Gru is the main character, the Minions will undoubtedly have a lot of air time. As Collider mentions, the last film made it clear that Gru is more of a secondary character now that the Minions are big worldwide. As Universal is sitting on a goldmine, there’s no chance of Despicable Me or Minions-related movies stopping production yet.
With an 80s-style villain in Balthazar Bratt, lots of little minions and shenanigans from Gru – what’s not to look forward to in Despicable Me 3?
Despicable Me 3 arrives in cinemas on June 30th.
