The DCEU put aside Suicide Squad 2 to move forward with the all-girl team-up film Birds of Prey. Margot Robbie will be returning as Harley Quinn in the film. According to the actress that the movie could actually be R-Rated.
Talking to Collider, Robbie revealed:
“I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.”
Right now, the movie aims to start shooting near the end of the year with Cathy Yan at the helm. Besides Harley, a lot of fans are expecting introductions for the DCEU’s versions of Catwoman, Batgirl, Black Canary, Huntress, and possibly Poison Ivy.
Though Marvel is a kid-friendly franchise, I would be happier if the DCEU would be open to exploring R-rated territory. Sure Wonder Woman and Shazam! could be for the kiddies but all the themes presented in Man of Steel as well as Batman v Superman were pretty intriguing.
Never mind what the haters say, DC; do your own thing!
Birds of Prey doesn’t have a release date, but the movie could come out next year.
