Luka Cage Star Responds to the Show’s Cancellation

This week has been less than pleasant for Marvel fans. Aside from the end of Iron Fist, Marvel and Netflix have decided to cancel yet another Marvel adaptation – Luke Cage. In a joint statement, the streaming service and the studio confirmed their decision without explaining the reason for the cancellation:

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series” read the press release.

A few days after the announcement, Luke Cage himself aka Mike Colter has since addressed the show’s end. In a tweet sent out yesterday, the actor thanked everyone who was part of and watched the show fervently. While the end of the series was sad for the actor, he explains that the week has been just as kind – especially with the birth of his daughter:

“I am forever grateful to Marvel and Netflix for letting me portray such a prolific character, and I thank you amazing fans. As one door closes, another has opened, with the birth of my daughter this week. A lot of great memories. Time to make more. Always forward, forward always”

Colter isn’t the first person to comment on Luke Cage’s cancellation. Earlier in the week, the series showrunner, Cheo Hodari Coker, expressed his gratitude for his crew and everybody else involved in the show. He is thankful for the opportunity to make friends and make memories:

“A lot memories. A lot of individual thank you calls to make. Just want to say thank you to Marvel, Netflix, the best Writer’s room, cast, crew, the Midnight Hour, all those who graced the stage at Harlem’s Paradise and the most incredible fan base in the world. Forward always…”

Despite the cast and crew accepting the cancellation of Luke Cage, it seems like fans have taken it upon themselves to urge Netflix and Marvel to give the show a third season. A petition to bring back Luke Cage is currently active on Change.org. The petition has garnered more than 30,000 signatures:

“Netflix has made a terrible decision in canceling Iron Fist after 2 seasons. There are many fans of the character and the series and most people said that the second season was excellent. I think it’s unfair that Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil get a third season and their shows get mixed reviews too yet Iron Fist gets the shaft. There is so much more potential and stories to be told and it’s not great fan service to end the last season on a cliffhanger and not go along with it especially when the second season was more well received with critics and fans. So Netflix and Marvel please revise your decision and greenlight a third season for Iron Fist” read the petition.

Thus far, neither Netflix nor Marvel has retracted their decision to cancel Luke Cage.
