There’s a great deal of love for droids in Star Wars. R2-D2 helped Luke Skywalker out of some tricky situations in A New Hope through to Return of the Jedi. BB-8 took the reins in The Force Awakens. Now it seems Rogue One has its own ample supply of droids, too.
As you can see, C2-B5 does look a lot like a certain other droid. Apart from a couple of additional features and a lick of black paint.
Taken from The Star Wars Show, which you can see on Collider, here’s a run-down of exactly what R2-D2 and his rival, C2-B5, do:
“He (or, rather, it) is essentially a black-painted R2-D2 because, as we learn in the video shown below, both are part of the astromech droid family. Astromechs are utility droids used to maintain machinery, but C2 is utilized by the Empire.”
C2-B5 has competition for best droid in Rogue One, however, as we have another contender in the form of K-2SO. Director Gareth Edwards describes K-2SO as “the anti-thesis of C-3PO.” It seems likely he could win the battle of the droids.
K-2SO tells another character, “The Captain says you are a friend. I will not kill you,” in the latest Rogue One trailer, as Collider pointed out. We only get a glimpse of the droid, but it’s enough to demonstrate how cool K-2SO could be when Rogue One lands.
Though C2-B5 will be helping the Empire, we’re not exactly sure how pivotal the droid will be in Rogue One. However, The Star Wars Show’s host Peter Townley has offered some hints. According to Townley, droids under the Empire have their memories wiped so they remain subservient. Could this be something to do with C2’s appearance in Rogue One?
Rogue One opens in cinemas on December 16.
