Disney may be launching The Little Mermaid this week, but Universal Pictures is continuing the push for their underwater teenager movie, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. The film is set to release by the end of June, and we have a new trailer with Ruby going up against an evil mermaid who looks just like Ariel.
Check this out:
Though pop-culture has several versions of the Kraken from a giant squid to whatever Clash of the Titans delivered, DreamWorks has managed to come up with a version of the monster that could actually be a decent toy for kids.
Besides Ruby’s design, I just think it’s hilarious how the film is doubling down on how mermaids are evil, and they’ve decided to make the main rival mermaid someone who looks like Disney’s Ariel from the wavy red hair to the green bottoms. Even the mermaid’s transformation into a giant kaiju monster looks a lot like Ursula in the finale, complete with magic trident.
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
Ruby Gillman is a sweet and awkward high school student who discovers she’s a direct descendant of the warrior kraken queens. The kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids. Destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother, Ruby must use her newfound powers to protect those she loves most.
Catch Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken when the film hits cinemas on June 30.
