A month ago we got the trailer for The Long Walk, an adaptation of a Stephen King novel where kids go on a life-and-death game show where they have to walk. Now we have a trailer for another live-and-death game show from King, but this time, the contestants run. Check out the trailer for The Running Man starring Glen Powell and directed by Edgar Wright:
In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television—a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward.
Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show’s charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite—and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.
ome Just in case you need a reminder, Edgar Wright is the same guy behind cult favorites like the Cornetto Trilogy and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. His last movie, Last Night in Soho came out back in 2021 and had him embracing the horror genre, but now he’s back to snappy action, and this time he has rising star Glen Powell as well as a former collaborator in the form of Michael Cera.
Admittedly, Wright has been taking it slow when it comes to his recent projects, but this could be a great comeback. He was also said to have been in the running to direct the next Bond movie; but unfortunately he lost that to Denis Villeneuve.
Personally, I have my fingers crossed that Wright eventually comes back to Marvel and helms a rebooted Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. I mean, if he’s not interested in Star Wars, maybe a GOTG film would be the next best thing for a director of his brand.
Watch out for The Running Man when it comes to cinemas on Nov. 7.
